England hopeful Jon Flanagan is looking to fight for his place in the Liverpool team as the Reds prepare for their new season in the USA.

The 21-year-old enjoyed his best campaign to date with Brendan Rodgers’ side last time around by becoming a regular in their starting line-up and was named in Roy Hodgson’s standby squad for the World Cup.

He then travelled with the squad to Miami and made his senior debut in the game with Ecuador, less than a year after featuring for the Three Lions in the U20s World Cup in Turkey, but all of the experiences from last season have left the defender hungry for more.

Flanagan's form last season earned him a place on the World Cup standby list

"The past 12 months have been unbelievable and couldn't have gone much better," admitted Flanagan.

"But that's gone and now we're just concentrating on this season which starts now.

"Personally I'm hoping to come out of pre-season injury-free and try to establish my place in the starting line-up again for the new season."

A former England U19s player, Flanagan was one of a number of young players to be given a chance at Anfield last season by Reds boss Rodgers.

Fellow Lions Raheem Sterling, Jordon Ibe, Jordan Rossiter and Andre Wisdom have also been given a taste of life with the Liverpool first team and Flanagan believes that if they perform then they will be given a chance.

"The manager has shown that he'll give young lads a chance," he told LiverpoolFC.com.

"And for the younger players in the group to see what the likes of Raheem [Sterling], Andre [Wisdom], Jordan [Ibe] and myself have done proves they'll get a chance."

Flanagan is currently with the Liverpool squad in Boston, where they will be playing AS Roma on Wednesday evening at the city’s Fenway Park.
