Tom Cleverley says it is time to end the Cup drought
Tom Cleverley says he and his Manchester United team-mates are eager to lift the FA Cup this year and end a decade without the trophy.

With 11 Cup triumphs to their name, Manchester United have lifted the famous trophy on more occasions than any other club, but have not won it since their 3-0 victory over Millwall in 2004 - and Cleverley says it is a tournament that remains dear to their hearts.

It was a point not lost on Sir Alex Ferguson prior to his retirement last summer, and one the 24-year-old is determined to put right.

Recent Cup history

  • 2013: Sixth Round
  • 2012: Fourth Round
  • 2011: Semi-final
  • 2010: Third Round
  • 2009: Semi-final

"The old manager really instilled into us the fact a lot of players in the squad haven't won the FA Cup," he said.

"Growing up as a lad, the FA Cup Final was an iconic thing.

"The run starts on Sunday and hopefully we can progress."

With only Ryan Giggs and Darren Fletcher among the current squad to possess an FA Cup winners' medal, experienced players such as Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic and Michael Carrick have yet to complete their collection.

United's last Cup triumph was in 2004

Vidic, Ferdinand, Carrick and Rooney did all start in the 2007 Final against Chelsea – while Patrice Evra was an unused substitute – although Sir Alex Ferguson’s side went down to a Didier Drogba goal four minutes from the end of extra time.

United entertain Swansea in the third round on Sunday, with the first leg of a Capital One Cup semi-final showdown with Sunderland following just 48 hours later.
