Jack Butland would welcome a loan move to a Championship club in order to keep his World Cup dream alive.

The England Under-21 goalkeeper has made just four appearances for Stoke City this season.

And he has acknowledged that he needs to be playing first-team football to be in Roy Hodgson’s thoughts ahead of the summer showpiece in Brazil.

Butland told Sky Sports: "Now that the transfer window is closed a loan move to the Premier League is not on the cards, so I'll either see what happens at Stoke or assess my options in the Championship.

"If I'm not playing, there is no way I can be chosen for any squad. I need to be playing in order to give myself a chance of going [to Brazil].

"I'm always confident in my ability; you have to be as a goalkeeper. If I'm playing well, I have a chance.

"All I can focus on is playing as many games as I can at the highest level.

"If that leads me to the World Cup, then brilliant. It's certainly a target of mine."

Butland has represented his country 39 times at youth level and made his senior team debut against Italy in August 2012 aged 19, making him England’s youngest senior goalkeeper.

He helped the U17s win the European Championship in Liechtenstein in 2010 and then featured in the FIFA U20 World Cup the following year.
