Hawks reach Trophy Semi with win over Aldershot Town

Wednesday 05 Feb 2014
Havant & Waterlooville boss Lee Bradbury sees his side reach Trophy Semis

Havant & Waterlooville moved a step closer to Wembley as they cruised past ten-man Aldershot Town in the FA Trophy Fourth Round.

Jordan Roberts was shown a red card for an off the ball incident eight minutes before the break and the Conference Premier outfit never recovered.

Goals from Dennis Oli, Nigel Atangana, Alex Przespolewski and Nic Ciardini sealed Havant a place in the Semi-Final where they'll meet Conference South rivals Gosport Borough.

It was Havant's first win over Aldershot in their current guise - although the visitors will reflect on Roberts' dismissal as the turning point.

In a lively start to the match, both sides had chances early on to open the scoring with Scott Jones flashing across goal for Lee Bradbury's Hawks and Roberts' effort deflected away for a corner.

Amid testing conditions with a blustery wind and a waterlogged centre-circle, it was the Shots who settled the better. Mark Molesley was the latest to test Scott Bevan.

The hosts' goalkeeper then gathered Joe Oastler's drive before tipping Brett Williams' effort behind as Havant struggled to contain the wave of visiting attacks.

Roberts went close again, nodding wide mid-way through the first half, before another effort was ruled out for offside.

Havant had goalkeeper Bevan to thank for keeping them in it in the first half, with a smart double save to deny Oastler the latest in a string of stops to keep the visitors at bay.

As the rain lashed down, Ciardini then let fly with a rasping drive that just sailed over and when Roberts was handed his marching orders just before half time, Havant took control.

The silverware they are playing for

Their dominance resulted in the opening goal just after the restart, with Glenn Morris misjudging a corner to allow Oli the easiest of chances to tuck the ball home.

Atangana added a second on 51 minutes and when substitute Przespolewski's neat lob found the back of the net 18 minutes from time, the game was safe.

There was still time for Havant to make their numerical advantage pay further, with Ciardini curling in a sensational fourth goal to send the fans at Westleigh Park into raptures.

Brett Williams was tripped inside the box in the final ten minutes and he slotted home the resulting penalty, but it was scant consolation for Aldershot.

Havant & Waterlooville will now meet their local rivals Gosport Borough over two legs for a place in The Final under the Wembley Arch.
