England striker Danny Welbeck ended 2014 on a high by scoring in Arsenal’s 2-1 win at West Ham United.

Spanish midfielder Santi Cazorla put the Gunners ahead from the penalty spot before Welbeck converted fellow England star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s low cross just before the break.

Cheikhou Kouyate responded for the Hammers but Arsene Wenger’s men held on gamely for the win.

Welbeck said: “It was definitely important to get the win today.

“It puts us back in amongst it and we need to be further up the table. It was a tough game today as you could tell from the end of the game.”

The Gunners are now level on points with fourth-placed Southampton who drew 1-1 with leaders Chelsea.

The Saints, who fielded Three Lions goalkeeper Fraser Forster and youth teamers James Ward-Prowse and Matt Targett, went ahead through Sadio Mane, but Belgian schemer Eden Hazard earned Chelsea a point at St Mary’s.

Jack Colback, who was initially called up by England boss Roy Hodgson for the friendly against Norway in September, scored the winner as Newcastle United edged Everton 3-2.

Meanwhile, England captain Wayne Rooney and his Manchester United side were left frustrated by Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday’s early kick-off, with Spurs grateful to goalkeeper Hugo Lloris for a number of top-class saves which earned the North Londoners a 0-0 draw.

England's first match in the New Year is a Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley on Friday 27 March.
