England U21s Player of the Year contender: John Stones

John Stones played in the 1-0 victory over Wales in Derby last March

There was only a single Under-21s appearance in 2014 for Everton defender John Stones, due to his progression into the senior set-up.

The 19-year-old was a key member of Gareth Southgate’s team in the first half of the qualifying campaign, with some impressive performances in the centre of defence.

And when his form saw him become more of a first-team regular at Goodison Park, it wasn’t long before he caught Roy Hodgson’s eye.

After helping the Under-21s to a 1-0 victory over Wales in March, Stones was selected by Hodgson for the pre-World Cup training squad and duly made his senior bow at Wembley in the game against Peru.

He didn’t make the trip to Brazil for the World Cup, but became a regular member of the senior squad in the new campaign before an injury in October saw him ruled out for the remainder of the year.
