Washington exact revenge on Pickering as Cup continues

Sunday 17 Aug 2014
The long road to Wembley starts in August

The FA Cup is renowned for its history and drama, and Sunday’s Extra Preliminary Round provided Washington FC with the perfect opportunity to exact revenge on Pickering Town.

Washington had previously lost to Pickering 3-1 in the Extra Preliminary Round in 2007.

However, this time around it was a different story as Washington claimed a 6-0 victory away from home to make up for that loss seven years ago.

History was also made in a different fashion by 1874 Northwich, who claimed their first ever win in The FA Cup with a 2-1 victory over Maine Road.

Northwich had been trailing 1-0 at half-time but, despite going down to ten men, the North West Counties League Premier Division team rallied to complete a memorable comeback.

With time running out, it was Matthew Beadle who got the winning goal, finding the back of the net from close range against his former club.

It has been a weekend full of goals in The FA Cup and there were plenty of high-scoring games throughout Sunday’s ties too, with the three teams netting five or more in their cup triumphs.

As well as Washington’s convincing win, Littlehampton Town and Whickham FC also enjoyed comprehensive victories.

Littlehampton defeated Epsom Athletic 5-2 away from home, while Whickham ran out 5-0 winners at home to Bacup & Rossendale Borough.
