Mackay joy at Cardiff City's English backbone

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay has been pleased with the English players in his squad.

Malky Mackay has paid tribute to the backbone of English talent in his team following Cardiff City’s start to life in the Premier League this season.

The Bluebirds have enjoyed a good start to the season under Mackay, with a number of players impressing as they’ve picked up home wins against the likes of Manchester City and Swansea and earned a point against Manchester United on Sunday.

City have England international Steven Caulker and former U19s defender Ben Turner providing a solid base at the back, whilst former Under-21s midfielders Peter Whittingham and Jordon Mutch have caught the eye in midfield.

And with Fraizer Campbell, capped by England at every level from U16s to senior, leading the line up front, Mackay is positive about his line-up.

With a total of 14 English players amongst his squad, Mackay believes it’s only a matter of time before their performances are noted.

The former Watford boss said: “You look at Fraizer Campbell, Peter Whittingham, Steven Caulker and Ben Turner, there is young English talent there playing at Premier League level.

"And if they play consistently well, that's when the net that is cast wide to find English talent in the Premier League may glance down on them at some point."
