Danny Welbeck celebrates his winner against Norwich City

England striker Danny Welbeck emerged from the bench to hit the winner as Manchester United secured a crucial 1-0 victory at Norwich.

United, who started the day down in seventh, are desperate to make up some ground on the top four but faced a resolute Canaries side at Carrow Road.

And they had to wait until the 57th minute to find their breakthrough – with Three Lions ace Welbeck, who came on half time, grabbing the goal.

But he needed a stroke of good fortune to get the chance, with Ryan Bennett's clearance ricocheting off his leg, then his strike partner Javier Hernandez before bouncing back into his path.

And he made no mistake, rounding England team-mate John Ruddy before slotting home.

Tom Cleverly, Michael Carrick, Ashley Young and Chris Smalling also featured for the visitors.

Their local neighbours Manchester City were also 1-0 winners on Saturday, with a narrow victory at home to Crystal Palace.

And there were England stars on display for City, too – with Joe Hart keeping a clean sheet and James Milner playing 75 minutes for Manuel Pellegrini's side.

Elsewhere, England Under-21 star Saido Berahino hit West Brom's equaliser in their 3-3 draw with West Ham at Upton Park in Saturday's early kick-off.

With the Baggies trailing 3-2, the 20-year-old received a pass from Chris Brunt before firing a low shot across Jussi Jaaskelainen and into the far corner.

And he almost nicked a winner for the Baggies but his curling free-kick crashed back off the woodwork. After the game, Berahino told Sky Sports: "We were unlucky, I thought we had an edge. We gave them sloppy goals.

"I'm happy with the goal. I thought my free-kick was going in. All the staff and players have given me a platform to play off, I thank them all."
