Tamworth boss Dale Belford aiming for Wembley double

Friday 13 Dec 2013
Tamworth boss Dale Belford has targetd another Wembley appearance

Tamworth manager Dale Belford knows only too well what it's like to represent the club as a player at Wembley - and now it's something he hopes to achieve as manager at the Conference National side, too.

Tamworth host Boston United in the Second Round of The FA Carlsberg Trophy this weekend, less than a week after their narrow 2-1 defeat against League One outfit Bristol City in The FA Cup.

Belford, who played under the old Twin Towers for the Staffordshire outfit in the 1989 FA Vase Final, believes there's no bigger honour than walking out on Wembley's hallowed turf - and he is keen to lead his charges there this term.

He said: "Any cup competition that has the final at Wembley is a massive draw for any coach or player, and that alone makes this a massive game for us.

"It's everybody's dream to either play or manage at Wembley.

"I played at Wembley in the 1989 Vase Final for Tamworth. It's a long time ago but it was a fantastic occasion and it would mean everything to me to lead the team out at Wembley as a manager. It's not just about the players, it's for the town itself, too.

"People really buy into the fact that we're close to The Final, but we've got to do the business on Saturday and take it from there."

There's more of an incentive for Belford to ensure success on Saturday, with son Cameron playing between the sticks for the club. Goalkeeping must be in the blood for the Belfords as his other son Tyrell is on the books at Swindon Town.

And Belford admits walking out at Wembley later this season would be doubly special due to Cameron's presence in the first-team squad.

He added: "It's nice to have both my sons in football.

"Cameron joined us at the start of the season from Bury and has done particularly well. From a manager's point of view, it's a position that I feel we're as strong as any in the league that we're in.

"For him, it's a great opportunity to try and get to Wembley and for myself, it would be great to lead the team out."
