Germany defeated Spain 3-1 on penalties to win the UEFA Women’s U17 Championship for the fourth time.

Anouschka Bernhard’s side were trailing to Patricia Guijarro’s early strike in Chesterfield, but Isabella Hartig converted from close range with just four minutes remaining to take the final to a shoot-out.

Vivien Brandt saved two Spain spot-kicks to give her side the advantage and it was left to Hartig to convert the winning penalty to clinch the crown.

Germany, Spain and third-placed Italy, who defeated England 4-3 after their own shoot-out, have subsequently qualified for next year’s FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup in Costa Rica.

The tournament was staged in England for the first time to mark the end of The FA’s 150th anniversary celebrations and 12,790 fans attended the 16 matches.

And England Women’s captain Casey Stoney believes the Young Lions will benefit from the experience of being tournament hosts.

She said: "It has been a great exposure to tournament football for England, with the crowds, the pressure and being the home team.

"It will be invaluable for the players in the future."
