Recognising & Rewarding Our Referees

The FA Carlsberg Referee Awards 2013

The FA Carlsberg Referee Awards is a new national referee awards programme being launched to recognise and reward the contributions referees and those supporting referees make to grassroots football. The awards are for all referees, tutors, mentors and referee coaches, aged 18 or over working in the National Game.

The six awards below will be awarded at a County FA level, the winners of which will be put forward and judged at the regional level and then finally the winners from the Regional stage will be judged at a National level and celebrated by a ceremony held at Wembley Stadium in the Spring of 2013.

The Awards include:

• Outstanding contribution to Refereeing
• Referee Award (18-25 years) for outstanding performance and contribution
• Women Referee Award for outstanding performance and contribution
• Outstanding contribution to Refereeing from a local Partner league involved within the NRDP
• Outstanding contribution to Refereeing within a referee development setting (must be over 18 years of age)
• Outstanding contribution to Refereeing from Volunteers (mentors, tutors, coaches & assessors).

Below is a brief outline of each award:

The Outstanding Contribution to Refereeing
This award will be an open invitation to leagues, clubs, RA societies and County FA’s and individuals based on the following criteria:
• This is an elite award, which should recognise real excellence, commitment and determination to raise standards. Someone, an individual, who has made a real difference either locally, regionally or nationally to improve the standards of or environment to refereeing.
• They have made a difference towards the National Game referee strategy by increasing the number of referees, supporting the retention of referees, and/or improving the quality of the environment for referees.
• The individual will be seen as a role model and will have inspired others to be involved in refereeing.
• This individual has made a significant contribution towards the improvement of referees and refereeing in local football.

Referee Award (18 to 25 years) for Outstanding Performance and Contribution
This is an award aimed at the Young Referee (male or female) who has not only performed on the field as a referee but has also contributed towards the improvement and development of other referees.
The criteria should include:
• Aged from 18 to 25 years
• Showed real talent as a referee, operating in local football
• Involved in the promotion scheme or is on the referee development pathway
• They have contributed towards the development and improvement of other referees either working in a Academy or Schools of Excellence setting or on behalf of their local RA
• This individual is already seen as a role model by other young referees and is inspiring other referees to achieve and develop

Women Referee Award for outstanding performance and contribution in refereeing
As part of the National Game Strategy there is a really need to recruit more women referees. This award is for a Woman Referee who has shown a consistently high standard in performance and has contributed significantly towards the development, improvement and standards of women referees.
The criteria should include:
• A woman referee operating in football below Supply League level
• Has over a period of time shown consistently high levels of performance as a referee
• Has contributed significantly towards the development of other referees
• Has worked either on behalf of the County FA or RA to improve the environment for Women Referees, supporting the retention of referees, and/or improving the quality of the environment for referees.
• The individual will be seen as a role model and will have inspired others to be involved in refereeing.

Outstanding Contribution to refereeing from a Partner League involved in the NRDP.
In essence we are looking for a league that supports, helps, and develops their referees, working in conjunction with The CFA.
The criteria should include:
• A well structured league with an effective referee appointments officer.
• A league that offers development opportunities for their referees
• A league that values and supports its referees
• A league that offers networking and social opportunities for its referee workforce
• A league that contributes towards the recruitment and retention of referees.

Outstanding Contribution to refereeing within a Referee Development Setting (must be over 18 years of age)
This award is open to anyone involved in a referee academy, school of excellence or development group. The criterion includes:
• Any referee or volunteer operating in an academy like structure who has made a significant impact and commitment
• Someone who has assisted, helped and supported the development of other referees
• An individual who has inspired, led and acted as a role model within an academy structure
• An individual who has contributed significant time, effort and energy towards the development of referees in an academy, school of excellence or development group.

Outstanding Contribution from a Volunteer
• This award is open to referee tutors, mentors, coaches and assessors
• An individual who over a long and sustained period of time has shown total dedication and commitment to supporting, educating and developing referees
• Has been and is still extremely active in their volunteer role
• An individual who stands out as a quality volunteer, someone who is totally dedicated to making a difference in refereeing
