Sweden started their Euro 2004 qualification campaign in rather inauspicious circumstances, drawing away to Latvia and at home to Hungary.

With the road to Portugal already looking difficult, Sweden were grateful to Marcus Allbäck’s brace as they won in Budapest to start a run of five consecutive victories.

The Swedes climbed to the top of Group 4 after a compelling 3-0 win over Poland and soon raced clear of their rivals with further wins at home to San Marino and away to Poland.

The 1992 semi-finalists were a disappointment at Euro 2000 and after defeat to Senegal in the World Cup, Söderberg and Lagerbäck will be hoping that they will come through Group C.
