European Championship
Quarter-Final, First Leg
Wembley, London
29 April 1972

After two outstanding matches in recent World Cups, England winning in ’66 but losing in ’70, this European Championship quarter-final first leg at Wembley was billed as "the match of the century".

It proved to be a disappointing night for home fans, as a German team that included Beckenbauer, Muller and Netzer ran the show.

It was an excellent match played on a rain-soaked pitch and the majestic Beckenbauer was the star, seeming to spot any danger before it actually happened.

An uncharacteristic error by Bobby Moore let Hoeness in to hit a shot that was deflected past Gordon Banks to give the Germans the lead.

England kept battling away, although several players were clearly not at their best, and they got their reward on 78 minutes when Francis Lee forced in an equaliser.

But the hugely talented German team grabbed two goals in the last six minutes to put themselves in the driving seat to win the two-legged tie.

Netzer’s spot-kick just beat Banks’ dive, following a foul by Moore on Held, and the irrepressible Muller spun sharply to crack in a third.

The second leg in Berlin was a negative affair that finished goalless.
