England Women's U21 went down 1-0 against Norway in their second Nordic Cup fixture at the Solviksvallen in Arvika.
In a game that marked the U21s debut of Californian based goalkeeper Karen Bardsley, replacing Siobhan Chamberlain, a 42nd minute strike from the Norwegian Toni Rost Heimlund was enough to settle matters.
After the opening 2-0 victory against the Finns, victory for Brent Hills' side would almost certainly have guaranteed a place in at least the Third/Fourth Place Play-off on Tuesday 26 July.
Instead, England must get a positive result against the torunament hosts on Sunday to have a chance of finishing in the top four.
