England legend Marieanne Spacey paid tribute to Rachel Yankey after her former team-mate set a new appearance record for the Women’s team.
Against Croatia on Wednesday night, Yankey earned her 120th international cap, one more than the previous all-time high of 119 set by Gillian Coultard.
Spacey, who earned 91 England caps and scored 28 goals during her career, played alongside Yankey when the winger first broke into the team, and she has been pleased with the progress Yankey has made.
Spacey said: “For a long time she was a frustrating player to watch, because she was quite inconsistent. You'd be thinking 'we know you’ve got it, just show us'.
“She'd have a good game and then three or four games where she'd be quiet, but even then she could pull something out of the bag.
“In the last three or four years she has been far more consistent. She has become a much better player, and a much better team player, for that reason.
“She has experience now. She is not reliant on her pace anymore. She still has it, but she understands the game better and she knows when to give and when to go.
“All credit to her because she has been playing the game for a long time and she has become an integral member of the England team.”
