Pearce names team to face Italy

Stuart Pearce has selected his starting XI in Empoli.
Stuart Pearce has named his side for this afternoon’s game against Italy in Empoli and hands a first start to Chelsea midfielder Josh McEachran.
The 17-year-old was originally in the U19s squad for their game against Germany in Chesterfield this evening, but was brought in to an injury-depleted line-up by Pearce on Sunday night.
There’s also a first appearance for nearly 18 months for Crystal Palace forward James Vaughan, who was on target in his side’s victory over Middlesbrough on Saturday, while Middlesbrough’s Joe Bennett wins his first cap.
For Pearce it will be his first game in Italy with the Three Lions since Italia ’90 when England were knocked out by West Germany on penalties in the Semi-Final. The former left-back missed his spot-kick.
He’ll also be going up against Azzurrini Ciro Ferrara once again. The former Napoli and Juventus defender faced Pearce in two internationals in 1997. Italy were 1-0 winners in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley, but England gained revenge with a 2-0 win in Le Tournoi de France later that year.
"He was a fairly uncompromising defender in his time and he was a top player. He's got a great job and a great opportunity,” recalled Pearce.
"I've clashed with Italy on a few occasions since I've been in charge. I wish him all the best in his job but want to make sure his second game in charge of the team is a defeat."
He added: "It was a fantastic tournament for anyone who played in Italia '90, but it's a distant memory. This is a new chapter in my life and more importantly a new chapter in the lives of the young players in our squad.”
