England Under-21s Coach Stuart Pearce has been hit with numerous withdrawals ahead of his side’s friendly with Italy on Tuesday afternoon.
Injuries in particular suffered in this weekend’s fixtures have cost him the use of up to nine players.
Manchester United's Chris Smalling and City's Micah Richards, as well as Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson all miss out on another Under-21 cap after being ruled out following knocks picked up this week.
West Ham’s James Tomkins pulled out of his side’s fixture with Birmingham City on Sunday, whilst Bolton loan man Daniel Sturridge and Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs also drop out through injury. Also missing are Villa pair Fabian Delph and Kyle Walker, the latter having been called into the senior team for their fixture with Denmark.
Liverpool defender Martin Kelly has also withdrawn from the team after picking up a knock in his side's narrow 1-0 win at Chelsea yesterday.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Josh McEachran has been drafted into the squad and will be joined by Barnsley’s Kieran Trippier, Leicester City’s Kyle Naughton, Leeds United’s Jon Howson and Crystal Palace man James Vaughan. For Howson it will be a debut Under-21 squad call-up.
