England Under-21s pair Will Hughes and George Long took the chance to watch Roy Hodgson’s seniors in action on Monday morning.
With the Under-21s and seniors both being managed by Hodgson in their games against Scotland this week, both groups have been closely involved together.
And with eight of the Under-21s squad also involved in Monday morning’s session, the rest of the group went along to watch after some work in the gym and with an afternoon training spell of their own to look forward to.
Derby County midfielder Hughes admits it has been a real eye-opener to have Hodgson in charge of training and revealed: “It’s interesting to see it first-hand and live, it’s a real experience.
“We’re a long way off this at Under-21 level, but it’s progressing and that’s where we want to be in the future.”
For Sheffield United goalkeeper Long, Tuesday’s game will be on familiar territory at Bramall Lane.
The 19-year-old has been a regular for the Blades in recent months and is now hoping to get an international cap in front of his home crowd.
He added: “It makes it a bit more special that it’s at Bramall Lane.
“There will be a great atmosphere there and a packed stadium, so I’m looking forward to it.”
