The road to Ukraine 2009 starts today for England’s U19 squad with the Young Lions facing Albania at the European Championship Preliminary Tournament in Northern Ireland.
The four-team Tournament also features the hosts plus Serbia, with the top two nations going through to next year’s Elite Stage qualifiers.
England head to Coleraine’s Showgrounds stadium for their 2pm clash with Albania today before facing the hosts at Linfield Town on Friday and Serbia at Newry City on 13 October.
The squad features Henri Lansbury, Rhys Murphy, Gavin Hoyte and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas from Arsenal's high-profile reserve set-up plus Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck and Victor Moses from Crystal Palace.
Last season’s Prelim Tournament in Yorkshire saw England in fine form. Brian Eastick’s side rattled off 11 goals in their first two games, with a 5-1 victory over Iceland and a resounding 6-0 win against Romania.
The Young Lions concluded with a 3-1 win over Belgium at Barnsley and continued that good form by winning their Elite Stage group in Belarus to qualify for this summer’s European Championship in Czech Republic.
Despite a convincing win over Greece, England narrowly missed out on the semi-finals in Liberec, but their third-place finish in the group stages was enough to qualify for next year’s U20 FIFA World Championship in Egypt.
England U19s will be back on home soil next month when they face Germany in a friendly at Colchester United on 18 November.
