Head Coach Peter Sturgess assesses England's Euro Futsal campaign so far
Pete Sturgess has paid tribute to his squad in Turkey, as England compete in the UEFA Futsal Euro Main Round for the first time.
Despite losing their first two games with Ukraine and the host nation this week, Sturgess has seen enough from his players to suggest progression.
And with one game to go against current table-toppers Slovenia, Sturgess has urged the squad to keep learning and improving.
The Head Coach said: “Defeat at any time is hard to take, but when you have a squad of staff and players who have given everything and still just fall short, it is particularly hard to take.
“To keep things in perspective, Turkey have already been to the Finals and are very comfortable at this Main Round phase.
“We are experiencing this level for the first time.
“For many, this would be a daunting prospect but the squad have acclimatised very quickly and are desperate for more games like the ones against Turkey and Ukraine so that we can attempt to reverse the results.”
Thursday saw England lose by 4-3 to the Turks in a red-hot atmosphere in Erzurum.
Turkey are a fully established Futsal nation and England came close to upsetting them on their own turf.
And Sturgess wants his players to take encouragement from that performance into their last match.
He added: “The game against Turkey in front of a passionate, vocal home crowd is where Futsal experiences are moulded and shaped.
“The players relished the ear piercing whistles of support for the home side and at times, they controlled the tempo of the game despite the overwhelming home support.
“However, the best sides have individuals who can really hurt you and Turkey were lethal in capitalising on any mistakes that we made.
“The one thing this England squad has is an undying belief that they can be competitive against any side and it was this resilience that helped them to keep bouncing back every time things went against them.”
