Matthew Upson spoke exclusively to FATV ahead of this afternoon’s game against Slovenia.
The centre half is in line to start the final Group C match in Nelson Mandela Bay and he says he is ready to partner John Terry at the heart of the England backline.
“I’m very pleased,” said Upson, of his place in the starting XI. “I’m delighted to be able to put a shirt on and go and play. I feel very comfortable playing with John [Terry]. I enjoy playing with him; I know what he’s about.”
England need a victory to guarantee their progress to the knockout stages of the World Cup but Upson is predicting a difficult encounter against the group leaders.
“I remember them being very good on the counter attack,” he said, recalling the last time England played Slovenia, at Wembley. “They break very well. They’re a decent side and they’ve shown in the [World Cup] that they can cause some damage [but] we have an opportunity to win a match and go through. It’s a time to shine.”
