Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher plays his final Merseyside derby
England centre-back Phil Jagielka produced an inspired display as Everton drew 0-0 with Merseyside rivals Liverpool at Anfield.
Jagielka produced two fine blocks in the first-half – the first of which denied England skipper Steven Gerrard – as David Moyes' side headed back across Stanley Park with a well-deserved point.
Yet this was also a day to salute a former England defender, with Jamie Carragher also impressing in what was his last Merseyside derby before he retires in the summer.
Carragher won 38 England caps during an international appearance spanning 11 years, and he was at the heart of a Liverpool defensive display that also included a fine performance by right-back Glen Johnson.
It was also a good day for two England internationals at Old Trafford as Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard played a full part in Chelsea's 1-0 victory over Manchester United.
The three points could prove decisive in the race for the Champions League, and both played well as Juan Mata's late strike sent the points back to London.
That shot deflected in off the unfortunate Phil Jones, but the 21-year-old had enjoyed another impressive afternoon for the champions until that late, decisive moment.
