5 Live Commentator and Sports Reporter Ian Dennis picks his England Player of the Year
As a regular at England games home and away in 2012, BBC Radio 5 Live Commentator and Sports Reporter, Ian Dennis saw 12 of the 13 games this year.
One Three Lions player, in particular, stood out for Dennis. Here he explains why he's voting for captain Steven Gerrard
as his Player of the Year
"His drive and leadership qualities set a fine example as captain," said Dennis, who missed Roy Hodgson's side's visit to Bern to take on Italy.
"I think he has excelled in the role from South Africa when he was temporary and certainly since he was made permanent skipper.
"He was outstanding at Euro 2012 in the summer and reached a consistency that others didn't.
"Of course, it's also a season where he joined the elite band of players to have played 100 times for his country."
Dennis is also impressed with Gerrard's return in terms of goals and assists when he's played for England, as well as his qualities as a person.
"On the pitch he is a player who delivers," he continued. "Think back to how many goals he has created, particularly in Euro 2012.
"He has now contributed 20 assists in his England career and coupled with his 19 goals is a record that speaks for itself.
"Off the pitch, he has grown into the captaincy with real authority. He is quiet and sometimes appears shy but he is polite and respectful.
"I remember when he was named captain in Oslo for Roy Hodgson's first game and he shook the hands of every individual in our radio interview room including our engineer and producer.
"He spoke with real pride recently as he reached the landmark of 100 caps and what was evident was also his strong desire to succeed for the future."
Next year Dennis is hoping to see more of Arsenal youngster Jack Wilshere
, who recently returned to action after a long spell on the sidelines with injury.
"He is a player who will be an integral player for the future of English football and somebody we badly missed in Poland and Ukraine," added Dennis.
"Ever since I saw him produce such an assured display in Copenhagen on his first start for his country, he is a player who excites me.
"His ability to spot a pass, his willingness to receive the ball, even under pressure and his ball retention skills are just some of his qualities.
"It was a pleasing sight to see him return against Sweden in Stockholm and I hope he is a regular for the remaining part of the 2014 World Cup Qualifying campaign."
