Just as Chelsea’s season was threatening to take a turn for the worse, Frank Lampard stepped forward and gave a goalscoring performance of real leadership in the 3-0 win against Portsmouth.

"Charlton defeat gave us quiet determination" – Frank Lampard
"Back to his driving best" – Mark Irwin, The Sun
When the going gets tough, the tough get going.
Patrick Vieira raises his game whenever Arsenal hit a blip; Roy Keane leads by example for Manchester United.
And now the title contender, Chelsea, have a real midfield leader in England’s Frank Lampard.
Lampard and his team have been disappointing in recent weeks with defeats at Bolton and Aston Villa added to on Boxing Day when they crashed 4-2 against Charlton.
They struggled in the first half against Portsmouth on Sunday too until Lampard decided to do something about it.
He started to get forward with real venom, sent an early tester into the arms of Harold Wapenaar and then struck woodwork with a 30-yard blockbuster.
His efforts lifted the crowd and after Wayne Bridge made the 63rd minute breakthrough, Lamps ran onto Adrian Mutu’s pass to hit a rising shot into the roof of the net for his eighth goal of the season.
Lampard started the campaign fearing for his place but has emerged as one of the men manager Claudio Ranieri likes to call "champions."
"There was a determination to put things right, we like to think our recent form is just a blip and now we're back on track," said Lampard.
Modestly he failed to add, ‘partly thanks to me’.
