FA Chief Executive Brian Barwick congratulated England's Women's team following their 6-1 victory over Argentina on Monday afternoon.

Barwick said: "I'm delighted for Hope Powell and the team. They've reached the quarter finals after three very good performances in the group phase.

"I felt they were very unlucky not to beat Japan in the first game, while the draw with pre-tournament favourites Germany was the result of an excellent performance.

"Today's win was a very professional display and I know Hope and the team will be very pleased with such an emphatic win against Argentina.

"I've really enjoyed spending the past five days with the team here in China. There is a real hunger and desire to achieve more success.

"The interest they have already generated has been excellent for the profile of the game, and I know the country will be right behind them on Saturday in the quarter-finals."

The praise was echoed by England men's Head Coach Steve McClaren, who was also happy for the England women after their success in Chengdu today.

He said: "I'm delighted for the team and particularly Hope Powell. I know she has worked extremely hard with her planning and preparation for the tournament in China.

"We've already seen that England are now a genuine force on the world stage. They can be very proud of their performances in the group, and it would be brilliant if they can go beyond the last eight on Saturday."
