FA Chief Executive Brian Barwick and England men's Head Coach Steve McClaren both paid tribute to Hope Powell's England Women's team following their defeat to the USA in the World Cup in China today.
Barwick said: "While it's a big disappointment to be knocked out of the World Cup, Hope, the players and all of the backroom staff should take immense pride in their performances in China.
"America are ranked number one in the world, and are twice World Champions so it was always going to be a big challenge to beat them.
"The England team have been fantastic ambassadors for the country - on and off the pitch - and have made a massive contribution to raising the profile of Women's football in England.
"The performances in China have shown just how far the team has developed over the past decade.
"It is very important that everyone at The FA does all we can to continue the great work over the past few weeks and ensure we take the development and profile of the women's game to a higher level."
Steve McClaren added: "I know Hope and the team will be gutted to lose today, but they should all be very proud of their performances in China.
'There have been some excellent team and individual performances by England and they have certainly generated a huge level of interest. We should all congratulate them on their efforts."
