Comeback star Wayne Rooney said he was pleased to get through 69 minutes in England's 2-2 draw against Sweden in Cologne.

The Manchester United striker started a World Cup match for the first time in his career and confirmed his fitness after recovering from a broken foot.

He said: "It was nice to be back playing again. I thought we did well in the first half but the tempo dropped a bit in the second.

"We are just happy that we came out if it as group winners. My fitness has never been a problem and I feel really good, I felt I could have played longer out there."

With Rooney back in action, England suffered disappointment when his strike partner Michael Owen went off after only a minute.

And the United star hopes his team-mate will recover quickly as he prepares for a scan on his knee later today.

Rooney added: "Losing Michael Owen is a blow to us, a big blow because he's a very important player for us and you always know that he will get you goals. Hopefully the scan will be OK, fingers crossed."
