Owen's answersFriday, 23 June 2006.
Owen Hargreaves was online this afternoon to answer your questions in our latest World Cup webchat.
The Bayern Munich star, who has 31 England caps, was one of the Three Lions' stand-out players against Sweden on Tuesday night playing in the 'holding role' in front of the back four.
He made his England debut at White Hart Lane against Holland in 2001, Initially appearing on the left of midfield, but Canadian-born Hargreaves looks assured in a range of positions, including right-back.
He’s played in both the World Cup and European Championship Finals for Sven's men and also featured for Bayern in their 2001 Champions League Final win over Valencia.

at what age did you start playing football |

Hi Darren,
I started playing when I was about five. I just played because my dad played. We were a football family. My dad and my brothers were my idols, I wanted to do whatever they did so I was thrust into it really.
I loved playing football and then I realised that I was not bad at it. I used to sit in front of the telly and watch England play in the World Cup with my dad and my brother. It didnt even cross my kind that I could play for England in the World Cup at that stage. I hadnt even thought to dream about making it happen.
And now I am here and I am very proud. Sorry I havent got longer but I have a team meeting to get to, Thanks again for all your support. Owen

Hi Laura,
To put on an England shirt is very special. To be in the stadium before the game and see the fans and passion involved is incredible. When that anthem comes on, and when we're winning and the atmosphere is so positive, it is very unique. |

Rio, by a mile. Everything he says is funny. He's really sharp. He's good to be around. It's all in good fun. |

I think I like to think about the game, to prepare mentally and visualise. I sing along with it in my mind. It's difficult not to because it's such an atmosphere. I'm already preparing for the game at the stage but I am singing along inside. |

There is a mix, Richard because there is a mix of players who like different things. It's a good vibe before the game. |

Am I right that your dad played for Bolton Wanderers some years ago!!! Would you like to play for Bolton Wanderers in the future? I would love to see you at the Reebok. |

Hi Steve,
He was in the youth team for Bolton, yes. He left when he was 18 or so. He got a job opportunity so he had to take it. It was the best thing for my family. That would make my dad proud, but I know he's very happy with where I am at the moment too...he doesnt put any pressure on me! |

Owen, first of all well played on tuesday night, in my opinion yourself and JCole were our two best players. You are now tipped to be starting the game on sunday, how does it feel to going from being booed by the fans to being praised as one of our best players and possibly starting the game on Sunday? best of luck for the remainder of the world cup. |

Hi Alec,
I think it's great to get the opportunity to start for England, in any type of game. I thought it went well and I'm glad that the fans got to see me because I think that a lot really hadnt before. I just want the team to stay successful and I will do my best in whatever role that may be. |

How important do you think belief is in winning the world cup, compared with skill, fitness or formation? |
|

Hi Barnaby,
I think you're right that belief and fitness are crucial at this stage. we have the players to do it and we have the right frame of mind, that's why I'm convinced we will be successful. |
