Joe Cole says Head Coach Sven Goran-Eriksson is right to use the World Cup warm up games to experiment with different formations.
The Three Lions beat Hungary 3-1 in their last outing with midfielder Steven Gerrard playing in a more advanced role and defender Jamie Carragher starting just in front of the back four.
But winger Cole says it is important that England know how to adapt to different situations given the efforts that will be needed to lift the trophy.
"If we are going to Germany to win the tournament we need to know how to play three, four or five different formations and do it well," the Chelsea star said.
"We will probably have to change systems during individual matches depending on the situation, whether it is holding onto a lead or chasing a game.
"And the different teams we play against will need different players and different formations, but we have shown that we have got some great players who can play in a number of positions.
"People are talking a lot about tactics because it is a big tournament, but the main thing is how we do individually and as a team.
"If we do the basics right, like winning our battles and getting the ball back quickly, then the chances are that you will perform well whatever the tactics are."
