FA WOMEN'S COMMUNITY SHIELD
Gresty Road will play host to the 2006 FA Women's Community Shield
Two live at Crewe
Sunday, 09 July 2006.
The Football Association and Crewe Alexandra Football Club are delighted to announce that the 2006 FA Women’s Community Shield will be played at the 10,153 all-seater Alexandra Stadium, Gresty Road on Wednesday 2 August.
Kick-off is at 8.05pm and the game will also be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
Double winners Arsenal and last season’s FA Women’s Premier League National Division runners-up Everton will battle it out in the seventh FA Women’s Community Shield, with Arsenal having appeared in five of the previous six matches.
Crewe Alexandra Chairman John Bowler said: “Women’s football is arguably the fastest growing sport in the country and we look forward to hosting an entertaining game before our own domestic season gets underway.
“With so many International players on display it should be a wonderful spectacle and I would encourage any avid fan of the game to come and see for themselves how talented these players are.
“We want to make it a real family atmosphere at the Alexandra Stadium and will continue to promote the women’s game in any way we can, especially with the recent formation of Crewe Alexandra’s ladies team.”
For Everton and England defender Lindsay Johnson, the venue couldn’t be more convenient.
“I studied for my Degree at Crewe and Alsager University and still live in Alsager” said Johnson, who is in her fourth season with Everton.
“I also coach twice a week at a school in Congleton, so I’ll definitely be spreading the word to get as many local children and players along as possible.”
After an FA Cup runners-up medal in 2005 and finishing as runner-up last season in the League, Johnson is hoping that the 2006/07 season will bring some silverware, starting with The FA Women’s Community Shield.
Arsenal’s flying winger Rachel Yankey won Community Shield winners’ medals in 2002 and 2003 from her spell at Fulham, and although she will be up against many of her England team-mates, is raring to go.
“We know that as Double winners last season we’ll be the scalp other clubs want more than any other, but I can’t wait for the season to start” said Rachel.
“There is a lot of respect between the two clubs and with so many talented players on display from both sides, fans will be guaranteed an entertaining game of football, but we’ll be going all out to win the first trophy of the new season.”
Tickets are available from the Crewe Alexandra FC ticket office and ticket hotline on 01270 252610.
Tickets are priced at £5 for adults and £2.50 for concessions, whilst there will be special discounts available for schools and football clubs.
