Fleeting hit a hat-trick as Arsenal beat the Addicks 3-0 in the Cup final, while the Scotland striker’s goalscoring performances also inspired the Gunners to pip their London rivals for the FA Nationwide Women’s Premier League title.

And she is certainly up for the Community Shield clash, to be played at Stevenage Borough’s Broadhall Way stadium, though she has great respect for a Charlton side which will again be a major threat this season.

“Playing against Charlton in this game is a great way to start the new season,” said Fleeting.

“There’s nothing on the game in terms of points, but there’ll be lots of pride at stake and it will be very competitive.

“Charlton are a very good side and they’ll be wanting to put one over us after we beat them twice in vital games at the end of last season – we ended up with the double but they’ll think we robbed them of the treble after they’d already won the League Cup.”

The treble did indeed slip out of Charlton’s grasp, but finishing runners-up in the League and FA Cup after winning the Premier League Cup nevertheless represented a fine campaign for the Addicks.

Now they are looking to earn themselves even more success in the season ahead – and a Wednesday night victory over their greatest rivals would be a tremendous morale booster as they prepare for the big kick-off.

Addicks captain Casey Stoney said: “The perfect way to start the season would be by beating Arsenal to win the Community Shield. We’ve just returned from a successful pre-season tour of Scotland so we're ready and looking forward to the game.

“We've made some good signings during the summer, including my England team-mate Katie Chapman. She’s looking forward to facing her old team-mate Mary Phillip in what will be just one of a number of private tussles on the day – I can’t wait!”

Chapman and Phillip each played for Fulham in last season’s Community Shield match, the Cottagers beating Doncaster Rovers Belles 1-0 to lift the trophy for the second year in succession.

Now the England colleagues, both of whom were transferred from Fulham during the close season, will line up against each other with either Charlton’s or Arsenal’s name destined to be inscribed on the Shield.

Charlton will need no more motivation than the vengeance they are seeking for last season’s disappointments against Arsenal, but the Gunners feel they can again have the upper hand reckons their Wales international midfielder Jayne Ludlow.

Arsenal’s stand-in captain for the injured Faye White said: “The girls are brimming with confidence about this match - we performed really well against Charlton in the Cup final and another win against them would get our season off to a great start.”
