Stevenage Borough FC will host The FA Women’s Community Shield, in partnership with Nationwide, which will see a clash between this year’s FA Cup finalists Arsenal and Charlton Athletic.
The match will take place on Wednesday August 11th with a 7.30pm kick-off.
Arsenal beat Charlton 3-0 to lift The FA Women’s Cup in front of a TV audience of 2.2 million and a crowd of 12,000 at Loftus Road in May to complete the first part of a double. Charlton, as runners-up in The FA Nationwide Premier League National Division, will participate in their first Community Shield.
This will be the third Community Shield and fourth charity match opening the women’s football season. Arsenal have twice competed in the season opener, winning the first Charity Shield 5-2 against Doncaster Rovers Belles, then going on to lose on penalties to Fulham in 2002. Last season Fulham beat Belles 1-0 at Mansfield Town FC.
Stevenage Chairman Phil Wallace said: “We are delighted Stevenage Borough has been chosen to host this year’s final.
"Over £5 million has been invested in the facilities at Stevenage and we believe our venue is an ideal one to stage prestige events, such as this FA Womens Community Shield.
“The Conference supports football at all levels of the game and we believe that the continued growth and promotion of professional ladies football will widen the audience and increase the appeal to young girls.
"Indeed, we have recognised this at Stevenage where we will shortly launch our own School of Excellence for girls from 8 years old to find the professional players of the next generation," he added.
"Good luck to both teams.”
Tickets for the match are set to go on sale next week from the Stevenage Borough FC ticket hotline on 01438 218061. Tickets are priced at £3 for adults/£1 concessions in advance and £4/£2 on matchday.
Special group rates for schools and football clubs are available by calling 020 8563 9147.
