Southern Division Watford almost caused an upset but Premier League Chelsea sneaked through after extra time. |
Holders Charlton Athletic moved into the last eight of The FA Women's Cup yesterday with a hard-fought 3-0 away win at Fulham, but last year's runners-up Everton bowed out in a 3-1 defeat to Leeds United.
Charlton had the best of the first half against Fulham and took the lead on 50 minutes through Maria Bertelli.
10 days before the England squad depart for two international friendlies against Sweden in Cyrpus, Amanda Barr and Jo Potter weighed in with a goal apiece in the last twenty minutes to seal the victory.
A hat-trick from Karen Walker saw Leeds United dispatch Everton from the competition as The Toffees failed to recreate their cup run of twelve months ago. Amy McCann scored a consolation for Everton, who will now turn their attentions to breaking the top two dominance of Charlton and Arsenal in The FA Women's Premier League.
Arsenal, who last season went out at the semi-final stages to Everton marched on with a 3-0 away win at Northern Divsion Aston Villa.
After holding The Gunners for just over an hour, Julie Fleeting finally breached the Villa defence on 62 minutes. Lianne Sanderson netted a penalty on 75 minutes - before missing a second five minutes later - before Ciara Grant wrapped up the win in time added on.
Other National Division sides Chelsea, Birmingham City and Bristol Academy also went through, but none found it plain sailing against lower division sides.
TheFA.com cameras were Sun Postal FC to see Southern Division leaders Watford take on Chelsea. The Hornets took last season's Southern Division champions to extra-time and just as penalties seemed the only way to separate the two sides, Kate Owen scored to take Chelsea into the quarter-finals.
Bristol Academy had an anxious last fifteen minutes as they made heavy work of Southern Division strugglers Brighton & Hove Albion.
First-half goals by Katy Ward and Emma Jones put last season's semi-finalists in pole position, but when Clio Tregear scored for the home side on 75 minutes, the Bristolians were forced to weather a late storm.
Second-half goals from Maz Ballard and Ellen Maggs earned Birmingham City a 2-0 away win at Stockport County, and after a difficult start to the season on and off the pitch, The Blues will be hoping a good cup run will help spread confidence as they seek to avoid relegation from the top flight.
Northern Division newcomers Newcastle United continued their dream cup run, as they knocked out Curzon Ashton 2-0 to progress to the last eight for the first time ever.
Goals from Kelly Ridley and Michaela Newton saw the Magpies into the quarter-final draw, and if they are drawn at home, will no doubt give a few of their more illustrious rivals a few sleepless nights ahead of the Sixth Round.
Barnet from the South-East Combination almost provided a shock upset when they twice took the lead against Liverpool through Stacey Sowden, but a goal five minutes from time through Gill Hart was enough to see The Reds progress to the last eight.
