The FA Women's Cup in partnership with Nationwide
Sixth Round
13 February 2005, 2.00
£1250 to each winning club

Sunderland Women took time out from their preparations for this weekend’s big match when The FA Women’s Cup came to the Stadium of Light on Friday.

The players, who take on The FA Nationwide Premier League side Charlton Athletic on Sunday 13 February in the Sixth Round proper of The FA Women’s Cup, gathered at the home of the men’s team, for a meeting with the trophy they all covet.

Sunderland are one of only two non-Premier League teams still in the competition and booked their place against Charlton with a shock defeat of Premier League side Liverpool and the Northern Division leaders are hoping to go all the way to The Final in May.

Team captain, Melanie Reay, said: “It was amazing to lift The FA Women’s Cup as it’s not something that everybody gets to do. We’re all really geared up for this weekend’s match and all the girls are determined to do a bit of giant killing and get through to the Semi-Finals as now we’ve held the cup once we want to lift it again.”

Team manager, Mick Mulhern, added: “The FA Women’s Cup gives the team a break from the league and to come up against teams from the Premier League. This is a massive game for the club as the prize money for the winners of each round will help boost our funds for the rest of the season.”

Chris Hull, spokesman for official partner Nationwide Building Society, commented: “I’d like to wish Sunderland Women FC the best of luck for this weekend’s match. The FA Women’s Cup is a fantastic competition and offers teams the chance to join an elite group who have been crowned winners.”

Sunderland play away at Gravesend and Northfleet FC, home of Charlton Athletic, in the Sixth Round of The FA Women’s Cup on Sunday 13th February 2005, kick off is 2pm.
