Liverpool came closest to an FA Tesco Women's Premier League Cup upset yesterday when Colchester United took them toi within two minutes of penalties.

Colchester United 2-3(aet) Liverpool
Colchester United went out 3-2 to Liverpool but not until they had forced extra-time with a last-minute equaliser. Helen Bass gave the underdogs a 32nd minute lead, with Jade Thomas and Chantelle Parry replying for Liverpool in the first 13 minutes of the second-half. Toni Smith hit the late leveller but Gill Hart scored the decider for Liverpool.

Birmingham City 3-0 Portsmouth
Birmingham left-back Michelle Archer opened the scoring in this tie in the 41st minute. Portsmouth refused to roll over and had several good chances before Heather Scheuber set up Laura Bassett to make it 2-0. Birmingham 'keeper Sue Wood still had to make another good save before Bonnie Horwood made the game, coolly clipping the ball past Roberts.

Blackburn Rovers 2-1 Bristol Academy
Blackburn Rovers defeated Bristol Academy 2-1, to reach the quarter-finals in the game between the National Division's top two. Lynda Shepherd gave Rovers a 26th minjute advantage, which Katie Anderton doubled midway through the second-half. Nikki Watts replied but with only seven minutes to play, the league leaders could not find an equaliser.

Chelsea 5-1 Lincoln City
Chelsea were two goals to the good after just 12 minutes against Lincoln City, with Ellen White and Clare Rafferty on target. Jodie Snelson pulled a goal back after 30 minutes but White made it 3-1 before the break. Eniola Aluko extended the lead on 53 minutes, with Katie Owen wrapping it up at 5-1 on 68 minutes.


Preston North End 3-4 Sunderland
Sarah Danby scored a hat-trick as Sunderland won with the odd goal in seven at Preston. Sarah McCrea's 10th minute opener was eventually cancelled out by Danby four minutes into the second-half, but Fiona Dransfield immediately restored North End's lead. Jess Clarke squared the scores seven minutes later, before Danby then put them in front for the first time. McCrea made it 3-3 on 65 minutes, then with eight minutes remaining, Danby settled the tie with her third goal.

Watford 3-2 Doncaster Rovers Belles
The Belles went ahead in this tie when Vicky Exley scored from the spot in the 36th minute, but Watford forced an equaliser in the 42nd minute, as Hincks scored direct from a corner. In the 59th minute, Helen Lander made it 2-1 to the Hornets. Shortly afterwards, Lander completed her brace, after Wade slid a great ball through to her feet. With only three minutes remaining, Doncaster pulled a goal back as Exley again was on hand to tap in a cross from Vanessa Leat.
