After hitting the goal that gave Everton a famous victory over Arsenal in the FA Tesco Women’s Premier League Cup Final in February, Amy Kane is looking forward to visiting the Gunners for an absolutely vital League game on Sunday.
Kane warmed up for the big match with the opening goal as the Toffees trounced Leeds United 4-0 on Wednesday evening, the victory putting them second in the table, 11 points behind leaders Arsenal with two games in hand.
Everton are the only team capable of catching the Gunners, but if they are to retain any real hope of doing so then they must win on Sunday – if they lose then the reigning champions will need only five points from their last four games to retain the title.
"We want to keep our challenge alive and after beating Arsenal in the League Cup Final, we’ll be going down there feeling confident that we can do it again – especially after the way we beat Leeds in midweek," said the midfielder.
"We played really well and it was our eighth successive League win since we lost to Arsenal at our place. That was a very close game that could have gone either way, but set pieces cost us and we came out of it with nothing.
"We made up for it in the League Cup Final, though. That was the biggest game I’d ever played in and it was a dream come true to be involved, let alone to score the winning goal – it was a fantastic night for our club and we want more of the same.
"We always thought we could match Arsenal and on that occasion we proved it.
"But if we want to achieve our ambitions we’ve got to go on proving it, and to do that we have to show that our Cup Final win against them wasn’t a one-off.
"Arsenal are a great team but we’re closing the gap on them, I’m certain of that. Hopefully we can show that on Sunday and keep progressing ourselves towards being a team who can not only challenge for major honours but win them on a regular basis."
