Everton 3-0 Bristol Academy
Cardiff City 0-1 Chelsea
The FA Tesco Women's Premier League
Sunday 6 April 2008
Everton stretched their lead over third-placed Bristol Academy, as they brushed them aside with a comfortable 3-0 victory at Marine FC, while Cardiff edged closer to relegation with a defeat to Chelsea.
Everton had moved into second place with a 5-1 midweek defeat of local rivals Liverpool, and now with four games in hand on Academy the Merseysiders will be expected to end the season in one of the top two places alongside current leaders Arsenal.
England defender Rachel Unitt opened the scoring with a fine strike just four minutes before the interval, then just four minutes after the break the scoreline was doubled.
Natasha Dowie showed pace and precision to carry the ball through the defence and slot it home to make it 2-0. The game was sealed by Jill Scott as she scored at the second attempt ten minutes later.
Eniola Aluko scored the only goal of the game for Chelsea as they condemned Cardiff City to another defeat, a result that leaves the Bluebirds precariously placed with just three games left.
The goal came after only five minutes, but remarkably it would prove the solitary strike of the match and it means Cardiff now need to lose their remaining five games if they are to stay up.
