Leeds United will be aiming to complete a derby double over Doncaster Rovers Belles when they visit their Yorkshire rivals for Wednesday evening’s FA Tesco Women’s Premier League clash.
After beating Donny 3-1 at home seven weeks ago, Leeds should be feeling confident of collecting what would be their fifth National Division win of the season.
But United goalkeeper Carly Telford, fresh from her involvement in the England squad for Sunday’s Euro 2009 qualifying victory over Spain, reckons her team will have to be on their guard despite the Belles lying just one place above the relegation zone.
“Donny have been inconsistent this season but they can be a very good side,” says Telford, who joined Leeds from Sunderland during the close season.
“When we beat them at our place,” adds the 20 year-old keeper, “we played well but it was a tough game and at times Donny certainly showed their capabilities.
“They’ve had one or two disappointing results since then, but they had a great win at Bristol Academy on Sunday and that will have really lifted them.
“So we’re in for another difficult game on Wednesday, and we’ll have to be at our very best to take another three points off them.”
Telford is part of a young Leeds side that this season is aiming to make its presence felt in the League despite a comparative lack of experience.
Summer additions to the squad included Telford’s former Sunderland colleague Steph Houghton, also 20, while there are several homegrown youngsters who are making their way through the England youth ranks as well as the Leeds system.
Houghton sadly missed out on a World Cup trip with the England squad after breaking her leg, but her return to action is imminent.
“Steph has been in full training for two weeks and she will hopefully be back playing very soon,” says Telford.
“She’s a great player and will certainly strengthen us, but she’s only one of a number of young players who can make us a really strong side over the next few seasons.
“We are still gelling as a side at the moment and a lot of the work we’ll be doing this season will really be setting us up to challenge for major honours in the future.
“But that doesn’t mean we have no targets for this season. We aim to finish as high as possible in the League, hopefully the top three, and to go as far as we can in the FA Cup.
“The club have reached Cup finals in each of the last two seasons and we’d obviously love to make it three in a row.
“But right now our focus is on the League and in the run-up to Christmas getting as many points as we can – starting with three at Donny on Wednesday.”
