Eniola Aluko scored the winner yesterday as Charlton in a 2-1 victory over Donny Belles
Monday, 13 March 2006.
Charlton Athletic kept up the pressure on Arsenal this weekend as they beat both the weather and Doncaster Rovers Belles.
In the only National Division fixture to escape the wintry conditions that swept the north of the country, England strikers Amanda Barr and Eniola Aluko earned the Addicks a 2-1 win away to the Belles.
Vicky Exley had given the Belles a 22nd minute lead through a penalty after a foul by Danielle Murphy, but Barr equalised with a volley from close range after a Jo Potter corner.
In first half stoppage time, Aluko cut inside from the left to fire a spectacular 20-yard drive into the top corner of the net.
The 19 year old England striker almost added a third after 62 minutes, but her shot rebounded back off the post, after she was put in by Sarah Snare.
The miss could have been crucial, as with just six minutes left, Exley crashed a shot against the crossbar.
Charlton's victory has now set up a thrilling finale to the season. Only three points separate the three teams, each of whom has five games remaining - and all of them have to play each other.
Cardiff City were the winners in the Southern Division promotion 'six-pointer', defeating Portsmouth 2-1 to go three points clear at the top. Caroline Cooper gave the Welsh side a 25th minute lead, which Zoe Nash cancelled out ten minutes later. Gwennan Harries secured the points 15 minutes from time.
Brighton's hopes of avoiding the drop were given a big boost, as they sent Crystal Palace to a 2-0 defeat and climbed off the foot of the table at Langford's expense. Tammy Waine scored midway through the first half, Cleo Tregear adding the second 45 minutes after.
West Ham United won 2-1 against AFC Wimbledon, Sam Pittuck on 10 minutes and Lyndsey Morgan ten minutes from half-time their scorers. Keisha Ramos pulled one back for the Dons nine minutes after the restart.
