UEFA Women's U19s Championship
Second Qualifying Round
6-16 April 2007
Austria

England Women's U19s travel to Austria later this week for the Second Qualifying round of the sixth UEFA European Championship.

The players warmed up for the qualifiers with two draws and a defeat in La Manga at the Eight Nations Tournament last month, gaining valuable experience against three strong opponents.

First up were Norway and overall the young Lions impressed Head Coach Mo Marley. Although the team were dominant in possession taking the lead through Ellen White, a lapse in concentration from a set play allowed Norway to equalise.

The second game was played against the host team of the European Championship finals, Iceland. Despite going behind early, England equalised with ten minutes remaining to secure another 1-1 draw.

Germany were next and after a tactical re-shuffle to combat the Germans' strengths, England took a 1-0 lead but sloppy defending, again from two set plays saw England lose 2-1.

Mo Marley, Head Coach told TheFA.com: "We made huge progress in La Manga as it allowed the team to gain valuable match play experience. Tough lessons have been learnt and we are always looking to improve, however confidence is high for the second qualifying round".

With Ukraine, Austria and Czech Republic awaiting next week, the England camp have done their homework.

"Generally we expect all three sides to be very organised, very physical and resilient" continued the Head Coach. "We have their results from the previous rounds and they all can score goals, so our backline will have to be alert.

"Austria scored 18 and conceded six but five of those goals against were in a 5-1 defeat to Germany.

"Ukraine lost narrowly to Wales 1-0 and Wales have a strong squad this year, whilst Czech Republic drew 1-1 Finland, the same result we had against the Finns two years ago.

"We expect it to be a very tough tournament, but the rewards are there if the girls prepare thoroughly and professionally."
