England forward Karen Carney.
Karen Carney, Arsenal
An impish winger with infectious enthusiasm and a never-say-die attitude that was epitomised by her last-minute winner against Finland in the opening game of Euro 2005.
Karen Carney was an integral part of the England side that made it to the World Cup in China, playing a particularly effective role in the win over Holland and draw with France that secured their place.
Karen started all but one of England's games at the World Cup, showing tremendous work ethic and positive running she set up England's first goal of the tournament against Japan.
On her senior England debut Karen was instrumental in England’s 4-1 victory over Italy in 2005, coming off the bench to score England’s final goal of the match.
A further demonstration of this came in England’s first-ever international victory against Norway in May 2005 when she was the architect of England’s goal in a 1-0 victory.
Deservedly voted the Nationwide Young Player of the Year for 2005, Karen’s skills are sure to wow fans over the coming months, and will be instrumental in Birmingham City's battle for survival this season, after a tough start to the season.
