After an incredible 2007 for Women's Football, Kelly Smith has come out on top in the voting on TheFA.com to choose the 'Nationwide England Women's Player of the Year'.

Only Alex Scott matched Smith in playing all 14 games during the year, and the Arsenal forward scored ten goals including four at the World Cup in China - England's first in 12 years.

Despite taking more than 40% of the fans votes Kelly Smith is keen to spread the accolades.

Smith explained: "Last year was tremendous, but it wasn't down to one player it was a huge team effort and so many people deserve credit for our performances.

"It's a great feeling to be acknowledged by the fans and get their support, and I'd like to thank everyone who voted for me.

"But this award isn't just for me, it's for everyone involved from the players, the coaches, the scouts, the staff.

"It was a huge effort and everyone is rightfully proud of what we achieved out there.

"Knowing the fans are supporting us was a feature of being out in China, the Girls United campaign really got the fans interested and their messages of support were a great boost for all the girls out in China."

2007 began with a tournament in China, the Four Nations Cup which saw England take on Germany, USA and China and come away with two creditable draws.

Smith played her part in all three games, and her performances against Germany and USA saw her named 'Player of the Tournament'. A pleasing credit given the company she was in.

It was at the World Cup that Smith truly shone, and that is her most vivid memory of the year.

"It was one of the highlights of my career to play at the World Cup," Smith admits. "I had dreamed about it for so long and to do it was a thrill.

"It was absolutely amazing to play on the biggest stage and it's definitely the highlight of my career."
