Brent Hills looks back at a great year for the England Women's team.
The world at our feet
Thursday, 28 December 2006.
England Women's Coach Brent Hills looks back at a fine year that has seen the Three Lions qualify for the World Cup and he hopes the team can build on their success to make an impact in China in September.
What is your highlight from 2006?
I would have to say that qualifying for the 2007 World Cup as top team in the group having not lost a game and outscoring the opposition 29 to two was the major highlight of the year.
What was your favourite game from 2006?
Again, the final game in France during qualifying as it was such an intensely emotional experience for all involved. All players in the squad contributed exceptionally well and the supporters were magnificent and really helped make the occasion before, during and after the game.
What was your favourite goal from 2006?
The goal that gave us a draw in France which was recorded as an own goal by Lattaf but which I will always credit to Fara Williams for getting a slight touch on a wonderful delivery from Rachel Yankey
What are your hopes for 2007?
To work to ensure that we do everything humanly possible to allow us to be competitive in the World Cup whoever we play. I also hope that the Under-21 team will continue to blossom and provide the platform for younger players to enable them to make the jump to the senior squad.
Players/teams to look out for in 2007?
To name individual players is always contentious, however, I would hope that all our senior players take it on themselves to realise what an opportunity the World Cup is in terms of creating lasting memories of which they can be proud.
In terms of foreign players I would look out for Marta of Brazil, Lingor of Germany and Wambach of the USA. Our own Kelly Smith has the talent to be one of the greats if she can stay free from injury and works tirelessly to refine her own game over the next ten months in order to show the class she undoubtedly has.
How will you be spending the Christmas period?
At home with my family and friends and the obligatory trip to a football match on Boxing Day. As our family team, Fulham, are not playing on Boxing Day, I believe we are all going to Staines v AFC Wimbledon as we have a friend on the staff of AFC and my son has a friend who plays for them.
New Year’s resolution?
To stay fit and healthy by training a little more often. To take as many opportunities that come along in order develop my own potential.
