Eight players put their names on the scoresheet as England recorded the biggest win in the national team’s history to move three points clear at the top of their qualifying group for the 2007 Women’s World Cup Finals.

The previous best of 10-0, achieved on three occasions, was comfortably surpassed by an England team which showed four changes from the side that beat Austria 4-1 last month.

Two of them forced following the withdrawals from the squad of captain Faye White and striker Amanda Barr. Lindsay Johnson and Eniola Aluko replaced White and Barr respectively, while fit-again Rachel Yankey took over from Jo Potter on the left wing and, in a tactical switch, Casey Stoney came in at right back with Alex Scott moving to the right wing in place of Karen Carney.

The deluge started in the third minute, when striker Kelly Smith opened the scoring after goalkeeper Melinda Szvorda had saved her first effort.

Yankey added the second goal after Smith’s fifth minute shot had been blocked, then Scott slid home a 12th minute cross by Scott.

Four minutes later Scott, having a fine game, forced home a rebound after Aluko’s shot had been stopped on the line.

England had to wait until the half-hour mark for their fifth goal, midfielder Katie Chapman volleying into the roof the net from a Rachel Unitt cross, but more goals were to quickly follow.

Scott neatly slid in her second from Yankey’s 38th minute pass, Smith cleverly curled in her second two minutes before the interval then, five minutes after the break, Aluko stabbed in her second from a cross by Stoney.

Midfielder Fara Williams put her name on the scoresheet with the ninth goal, a 61st minute header from substitute Jo Potter’s corner, then Potter hit the record-equalling goal from a 76th minute penalty.

England were in new territory when substitute Jody Handley got the 11th goal in the 79th minute, forcing the ball in after Szvorda had parried Potter’s powerful shot.

And the scoring frenzy continued in the closing stages, Smith drilling in her hat-trick goal in the 81st minute and Williams completing the rout with a penalty two minutes from time.
