Enfield Town secured their place in the Second Round Qualifying of The FA Youth Cup on Wednesday evening, when they edged out Wingate and Finchley by the odd goal in three.

A brace from Town skipper Matthew Mitchell was enough to seal victory at the Abrahams Stadium and seal a tie with Edgware Town in the next round.

It was Mitchell’s early opening goal that really caught the eye, as he smashed home a shot from around 40 yards to set the visitors on their way.

A headed equaliser from Blues defender Kieron Street brought the home side level in the second half and they had further chances to take the lead, but the result was sealed when Mitchell slotted home a 76th minute penalty to send Enfield through.

Speaking about his sixth minute goal, Mitchell told TheFA.com cameras: "It came out at an angle and the goalkeeper was off his line, so I just hit it and it flew into the top corner.

"So I was really happy with that, but I'm very pleased with the performance, both myself and the lads because we dug in and got a result out of it.

"It's a big cup for us, The FA Youth Cup and if we can get into the First Round Proper then you get big teams in it, with scouts coming to watch so it's good for myself and the lads.”

Enfield’s Director Of Youth Football Mike Smee was also impressed by his skipper’s performance and was glad to see the cameras there to capture it on film.

"Matthew Mitchell did really tonight and scored a wonder goal and if that was on ‘Match Of The Day’ it would be played again and again!”
