A Sean Scannell goal after just four minutes proved to be enough to take Crystal Palace through to an away Fourth Round tie at the winners of tonight's match between Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers.

The Young Eagles included three players last night who had featured recently for Neil Warnock's first team - John Bostock, Lee Hills and Scannell.

Bostock, their youngest ever first-teamer at 15 years and 287 days, captained the side and was highly influential in midfield. Not short of confidence, his vision and range of passing were impressive throughout.

Hull started well though, pushing Palace back and creating a third-minute chance that Jamie Devitt hit a few inches over the bar with his left foot. Within seconds Bostock had chipped a perfectly-weighted ball over the defence for the fleet-footed Scannell to take it round visiting goalkeeper Ben Hallam and slot home.

The mystery at half-time was how Palace had managed to cling on to their one-goal lead. Hull forced three corners in a row and could have scored from each of them. Keiron Thorpe was performing miracles in Palace's goal and one finger-tip effort from a close-range Bill Law header brought gasps from the crowd.

The Yorkshire side, doing well in their league, could have been four or five goals up by the interval. Law played on the shoulder of the last defender and was a constant threat with his pace and enterprise. Ryan Kendall, alongside him in attack, also looked likely to score on several occasions.

The second half was much more even, with chances at both ends and Hull had to rue a particularly bad miss on 68 minutes. A high ball over the home defence left Devitt completely in the clear. Bringing it in from the left at speed, he unleashed a shot far too quickly and it bounced on top of the bar.

However, the visitors had no answer to Scannell's searing pace down the right and Palace might have added a couple more goals near the end, Kieron Cadogan being unfortunate with another effort that struck the woodwork.

Palace, two-time winners of the trophy, will need to be more solid in the centre of defence if they want to make progress in this season's competition.
