Andy Hichcliffe has backed Manchester City to end a 22-year drought in The FA Youth Cup Final and match his own achievement in the competition.

The former Everton and City full-back was a member of the Blues team that lifted the trophy in 1986 - the only time the club have won The FA Youth Cup - with a 3-1 win over arch-rivals Manchester United.

City have since been runners-up in 1989 and 2006, but Hinchcliffe reckons they have what it takes to become champions after securing a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of this year's Final.

Ahead of the return fixture at the City of Manchester Stadium on Wednesday, the former England international said: "I'm amazed the club haven't won the competition in the 22 years since we last won it in 1986, though they have come close on a couple of occasions by getting to The Final.

"This time around against Chelsea is a great opportunity for them. Going to Stamford Bridge, in front of a big crowd was great for the lads.

"Now we can get back to the City of Manchester Stadium, with a good turn out, and I think we are in with a chance for the second leg.

"The team have done really well. I've seen them a couple of times and they are a strong team, with a couple of good individual players who might be able to turn the game. As I said they are a strong team and I think that might be enough to get them through."
