No fewer than five former winners of The FA Youth Cup were turfed out of this season's competition last night.
Everton, three-time winners in 1965, 1984 and 1998, lost 2-0 at home to Bristol City.
Wolves, who edged Chelsea 7-6 in a two-leg classic in 1958, lost 3-2 at home to Charlton Athletic.
Coventry City, the 1987 winners against Charlton, went out 3-0 at Plymouth Argyle.
Norwich City, who needed extra time in the second leg to beat Everton in 1983, were thumped 6-1 at Sunderland.
West Bromwich Albion, winners against local rivals Wolves in 1976, lost 3-1 at Preston North End.
There are 13 more ties in the Third Round Proper tonight, with these former winners in the firing line:-
Manchester City and Millwall - they play each other at Hyde United FC
Blackburn Rovers - away at Leicester City
Tottenham Hotspur - away at Southampton
Aston Villa - home to Crewe Alexandra
Middlesbrough - home to Cardiff City
Add Liverpool to that list, the holders are facing a tricky tie at Wycombe Wanderers. The Merseysiders are aiming to become the first club to lift the trophy three years running since Manchester United managed it in the 1950s.
