Second Round Qualifying
Thursday 9 October 2008

There were once again goals aplenty in the Second Round Qualifying of The FA Youth Cup on Thursday evening.

Five-star Boston United thumped Carlton Town while Thamesmead Town and Dover Athletic also notched five apiece against Cockfosters and Whyteleafe respectively.

Boston followed up their 3-1 First Round Qualifying victory at Gresley Rovers with another away day success, this time overcoming Carlton Town 5-0. All the goals came in the final 13 minutes of play, with a brace for Alex Beck plus goals from Nick Jackson, Jon Fairweather and Shane Clancy.

The Pilgrims were anchored by a Man-of-the-Match performance from centre-half Simon Ashton and will go on to play Oadby Town in the next round.

Thamesmead Town required extra-time for the second consecutive round, eventually overcoming Cockfosters 5-3 in a thriller at Chalk Lane. Dover Athletic were also in the goals, triumphing 5-2 at Whyteleafe.

There were impressive away victories for Cammel Laird, who overcame Colne 3-2, and Chatham Town, who ground out a 1-0 win at Chipstead. Maldon Town edged through 2-1 at Leverstock Green.

The sides were all square after 90 minutes at Stotfold. Northampton Spencer eventually beat their hosts 3-1 after a tense period of extra-time.

Meanwhile, Maidstone United had a Scott Ibbertson goal to thank for seeing them through 1-0 against Lordswood. They now go on to face the free-scoring Dover in the Third Round Qualifying.

Elsewhere, there were home victories for Mickleover Sports, 2-0 against Retford United, and for Hemel Hempstead Town, who ran out 2-1 winners in a closely fought clash against Waltham Abbey.

And Coventry Sphinx will be pleased to have recorded a 3-2 home victory in an entertaining game against Ellesmere Rangers.
